In 2010, Brookhaven began a common reader initiative called the Open Book Project.
Common reader initiatives aim to create a sense of community among students, faculty and staff through the reading of a single book. Participants will engage in conversations and activities stemming from the themes of that book.
Instructors are encouraged to “opt-in” for the project and may do so on various levels. They can incorporate the book using structured lesson plans or make the book an optional outside reading assignment. Several campuswide activities also will be planned. A new book is selected each academic year.
