Dr. Nancy Castilla
As an English teacher and published poet, Nancy played a major role in the success of North Lake’s literary magazine, Duck Soup, serving as its advisor for over 20 years and cultivating creative writers in her classes. In 2003 she became the director of the Creative Program, publishing yet another creative writing magazine and spearheading an annual Writers’ Fest.
Nancy was the Minnie Stephens Piper Professor at Mountain View College and North Lake College. She served on the steering committee of the League for Innovation for the national student literary competition and served as the district and college liaison for the contest. She edited a book of poetry by DCCCD faculty and staff.
In retirement Nancy is very active in the Irving community, serving on boards of several arts and women’s organizations or co-chairing various fund-raisers in their honor.
This spring, after the Texas A&M-Commerce’s Department of Literature and Languages named her the Alumni Ambassador for 2009, she gave a poetry reading. She was also honored with UNT’s Department of English award, “Outstanding Alumni for Excellence in Their Profession,” after which she spoke to members of the English Honor Society about teaching English in community colleges.
