Our Engineering Technology program, offered at Richland College, offers a broad base of hands-on technical skills that will prepare you to go right to work in a number of challenging careers.

Why is This a Good Career Bet?

With technology changing almost daily, highly trained workers are needed across all fields that require engineering-related skills. Skilled advanced manufacturing technicians, CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operators and semiconductor technicians are needed right now to program, operate and repair sophisticated equipment for high-tech manufacturing.

Many engineering technicians assist engineers and scientists, especially in research and development. Others work in quality control, inspecting products and processes, conducting tests or collecting data. In manufacturing, they may assist in product design, development or production.

About 35% of all engineering technicians work in manufacturing, mainly in the computer and electronic equipment, transportation equipment and machinery manufacturing industries. Another 25% work in professional, scientific and technical service industries, mostly in engineering or business services companies that do engineering work on contract for government, manufacturing firms or other organizations.

Most engineering technicians work 40 hours a week in laboratories, offices, manufacturing or industrial plants or on construction sites. Some may be exposed to hazards from equipment, chemicals or toxic materials.
