Protecting Yourself During Your Internship or Job Search

Dallas College posts internship and job listings for the convenience of students.

Students, it is your responsibility to research employers when you apply for or accept private, off-campus employment. Look for information about potential employers online. In general, internship applicants should not need to pay any fees. Use common sense and caution when applying for or accepting any position.

The college does not endorse or recommend employers, and a posting of an internship or job does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information provided by the employer. The college is not responsible for safety, wages, working conditions or any other aspect of off-campus employment.

Red Flags — Essentials to Avoiding a Scam

  • Do not give information about your personal bank account, PayPal account or credit cards to a new employer.
  • Do not agree to have funds or paychecks directly deposited into any accounts by a new employer. (Arrangements for direct deposit or paycheck should be made during your first day or week of actual employment on site — not before.)
  • Do not forward, transfer or send by courier (i.e., FedEx, UPS), or “wire” any money to any employer, for any employer, using your personal account(s).
  • Do not transfer money and retain a portion for payment.
  • Do not respond to suspicious and/or “too good to be true,” unsolicited job emails.
  • In general, applicants do not pay a fee to obtain a job. (There are rare exceptions. Be careful, and if you are unsure, investigate the company. Discuss any concerns you may have with someone at your campus Career Center.)
