1098-T Forms: Frequently Asked Questions

Your 1098​​​-T form for the prior calendar year will be mailed or available online by Feb. 1. Here are a few frequently asked questions about these forms:

You will get a 1098-T if you:

  • Made payments for your credit courses or took out a federal loan to pay for credit courses during the prior calendar year and
  • Your total non-loan financial aid for the year was less than the amount of payments you made and/or federal loans you took out during the prior calendar year

You will not get a 1098-T if:

  • A waiver or exemption paid for your credit courses in full during the prior calendar year
  • You made payments in the prior calendar year only for noncredit courses or audited credit courses
  • Your total non-loan financial aid for the year was more than the amount of payments you made and/or federal loans you took out during the prior calendar year
  • You are a nonresident alien student, or you have no official federal immigration status on file
  • You do not have a Social Security number on file with Dallas College

No. The Pay Plan setup fee and any late fee amounts are not included on the 1098-T because they are not eligible expenses for the tax credit.

If you paid for credit classes and continuing education classes during the same semester during the prior calendar year, and if the total amount of non-loan financial aid you received was less than the amount you paid, then yes, you will get a 1098-T. If you paid for continuing education classes only during the prior calendar year, you will not get a 1098-T.

If you print your form from Heartland ECSI’s website, it is equivalent to the form that may be mailed to you. You can use either one for the purpose of preparing your tax return.
