(DALLAS) — Dr. Joe May, chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District, has appointed Dr. Justin Lonon, DCCCD’s executive vice chancellor, to serve as interim president of Brookhaven College following the departure of Dr. Thom Chesney.
Chesney will begin his tenure as president of Clarke University (Iowa) in June; he served eight years as Brookhaven’s president.
“I have asked Dr. Justin Lonon to assume responsibilities for the college as Brookhaven’s interim president until our national search has been completed,” said May. “Dr. Lonon has been a valuable member of DCCCD’s executive team since 2005. He has served in a variety of leadership roles with commensurate responsibilities throughout that time. He will maintain some of his current responsibilities while he provides leadership for Brookhaven College during this transition period.”
Most recently, Lonon led the initial development of the Brookhaven College Early Childhood Education Baccalaureate Institute; he will continue to oversee several important milestones in its development during the next several months. Lonon and Chesney have been working together on transition and continuity activities in May.
In addition to his responsibilities as executive vice chancellor, Lonon also is responsible for leading educational affairs, student resources, workforce and economic development, systemic analytics, marketing, media relations, community outreach, digital communications, policy compliance and other duties. He also works with the district’s chief legislative counsel, Isaac Faz, and previously served as chief of staff as well as vice chancellor for public and governmental affairs.
Lonon has served on a number of Dallas-area community and civic boards of directors. The Arkansas native earned his master’s degree from the University of North Texas and his doctorate in management from the University of Maryland – University College.
