(DALLAS) — Dr. Joe May, chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District, was honored recently by the U.S. India Chamber of Commerce DFW for his outstanding leadership in education. May and others — including U.S. Sen. John Cornyn — were recognized during the chamber’s annual awards banquet in November.

Neel Gonuguntla, president of the U.S. India Chamber DFW, said, “The banquet honored individuals who have made a tremendous impact on our community.” The chamber was established to support professional, business and economic development throughout North Texas and to facilitate trade between the United States and India.

“I was honored to represent the Dallas County Community College District and to receive an award for something I love to do: promote education and student success,” said May. “We are building a network of partnerships in education, business and with organizations like the U.S. India Chamber of Commerce DFW. Through these efforts, we can remove barriers in higher education for students as we build and strengthen the workforce in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.”

Gonuguntla noted that the event was the chamber’s largest banquet in the organization’s 19-year history, with more than 750 guests and almost 100 sponsoring organizations. Cornyn served as keynote speaker and discussed India’s growing relationship with the U.S., plus the strategic importance of that relationship.

Other community leaders also were recognized: Chief Renee Hall, Dallas Police Department, for Outstanding Leadership in Public Service; Texas Indo-Physicians Society for Outstanding Community Service; Dr. Michael Williams, president, University of North Texas Health Science Center, Outstanding Industry Leadership in Medicine; and Anurag Jain, Entrepreneur of the Year.

The event concluded with a panel discussion about the future of business, including comments from Vivek Sankaran, president of Frito Lay; Karen Katz, former CEO of Neiman Marcus; and Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW International Airport. The panel was moderated by G. Brint Ryan, CEO of Ryan LLC.
