Owner, Send Me Out TravelBelmopan, Belize“As a person interested in mission work, I was looking for a job opportunity that would allow me to work remotely and give me a flexible schedule. Since travel is another passion of mine, I decided to pursue a career in the travel industry. I already had graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Baylor and had another career, but at Richland College I found the perfect stepping stone to realizing that desire to work in the travel industry.
“The course about starting a home-based travel business prepared me for a new, flexible career as a travel agent. The professor’s openness in sharing her own wisdom and experience was invaluable to me. Through her advice and support, I started my own travel agency three years ago.
“In 2012, I moved from Texas to Belize, and the travel agency became my full-time job and our source of family income. At the same time, it has given me the opportunity to dedicate much of my time to starting a home for at-risk youth in Belize. I’m thankful to report that business has only increased each year, and I continue to use and re-use what I learned in those three weekends. I could ascertain the quality of the TEMM program from this one course, and I would recommend it to interested students.
“Send Me Out Travel focuses on serving international faith-based short-term trips and overseas workers. Although we also provide leisure vacation packages on the side, the majority of our business is arranging faith-based mission travel. My wife and I live in Belize’s capital city of Belmopan and volunteer our time at Samuel's Sanctuary, located 30 minutes south of the city. My wife’s uncle, aunt and cousin started Samuel’s Sanctuary because they saw a multitude of neglected, abandoned, or abused children and young people.
“Over the last year, the vision has morphed into a focus on hosting and training teenage boys in life skills. We believe that if we can touch these teenage boys, we can influence the next generation of leaders in this country and address the issues of alcoholism, violence, teen pregnancy and abuse in Belize. We’ve spent the last year preparing the facilities and the land. Now we’re just looking for someone to serve as an in-room warden and room leader for the boys, and then we’ll begin inviting young men to come live there.”
David Gladney holds a B.B.A. in finance and international business with a minor in Spanish from Baylor University. He worked as a management consultant for three years in the Dallas office of KPMG, one of the “big four” accounting firms, then spent two years as the administrative pastor at Antioch Community Church in Dallas.
As the sole proprietor of Send Me Out Travel, he markets, sells and provides administrative oversight for travel reservations, as well as manages all business and processes for the travel agency. Though he would have like to have taken other TEMM courses, the one class he did take provided enough background to begin his new business.
