Lorena Cavazos has taught in DCCCD since 2014. She holds a Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) with a major in midwifery and a bachelor’s degree in nursing, both from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She is finishing a post-master’s certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC) from the University of Texas at Arlington and is also a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). She has held ACTFL certification as a Spanish-English interpreter since 2006 and is Basic Life Support (BLS) certified.
Professional experience includes serving as an RN at Los Barrios Unidos Community Clinic and at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, as well as a certified nurse midwife in Texas and Arizona. She also worked as a registered nurse at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.
She is an active member of the North Texas Nurse Practitioner Association and the American College of Nurse Midwives, as well as a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. Community involvement includes serving as a survivor advocate at the Albuquerque Rape Crisis Center and at the New Mexico Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.
