Sheila Vandenbush, Ph.D., CDA, RDA, RDH

Dean, Dental Hygiene Program

Dr. Sheila Vandenbush became dean of the Dental Hygiene program when it was initiated in the fall of 2016. Since 2010, she had served as the dental hygiene director of Sanford-Brown College, the dental hygiene program formerly located in the El Centro program's current space.

For six years before that, she served as oral health director for the state of Michigan, where she worked on developing organization processes, strategic goals, internal and external communication, quality assurance and policy development, and implemented a statewide dental sealant program.

Previous educational administration experience includes serving as director of dental hygiene at Lansing Community College in Michigan; dental programs director at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico; and dental assisting and dental hygiene director of Blinn College in College Station, Texas. She has also served as a dental hygiene and dental assisting consultant, and a consultant to the American Dental Association on Dental Education. She is a member of the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations’ National Board test construction committee.

Dr. Vandenbush has made numerous professional presentations, including to the National Head Start conference; to the Michigan State Oral Health Conference; and to the National Oral Health Conference. She is the author of articles in several professional publications, including the Journal of Practical Hygiene, the Journal of Public Health and the Michigan Dental Journal.

She holds doctoral and master’s degrees in educational human resource development from Texas A&M University; a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma; and an associate degree in dental hygiene from Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely, Colorado.

She maintains active certification as a registered dental hygienist in the states of Colorado and Texas, and is registered as a dental assistant.
