Sophia Kwon has served since May 2017 as an accounting instructional specialist. She has guided, tutored, interpreted for and assisted students and faculty for academic and personal improvement in higher education in the U.S. and in South Korea.Previous work experience includes positions as a teacher assistant, certified Korean tutor, department assistant, lab assistant, and adjunct instructor in Korean. As a substitute English instructor for inbound Korean students in an intensive English program, she interpreted and translated English into Korean, and helped to negotiate cultural differences between South Korea and the U.S. during planning and implementation of the program. At Brookhaven College, she worked as a part of the Fall 2016 lab leadership team to assist faculty and students and co-managed the lab in Summer 2015, also serving as an advisor for a newly organized student organization club during Fall 2017. Ms. Kwon earned a bachelor’s degree from Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea, in 2005 and has lived in the U.S. since 2010. She started the Accounting program at Brookhaven College in 2011 and received a Merit Scholarship from the Brookhaven Accounting Department in 2013. She is earning a master’s degree in learning technologies from the University of North Texas and has developed online teaching and learning materials for ESOL (especially grammar and writing), Korean as a second language, online tutor training, and Excel in Accounting. One module was implemented for new tutor trainees during Fall 2017, and another implemented for accounting students in Spring 2018. She developed online Korean language teaching and learning materials and served as an online teacher of Korean at Brookhaven in 2015. She earned a certificate in a master course as a teaching specialist in Korean language from Seoul National University in 2015.Ms. Kwon is eager to incorporate her accounting knowledge, online teaching experience and related skills into working closely with faculty and assisting students.
