Program Coordinator and Faculty
John Colton Sargent holds a bachelor’s degree in recreation and park administration, with a specialty in park design, from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois in Champaign. He is a registered architect in Texas, Utah, Nevada and Missouri and holds certification from the National Organization of Architectural Registration Boards. He has served as the program director for the Residential and Commercial Building Performance Technology programs since 2014.
He owns Sargent Design Group, an architectural and planning company, and has more than 25 years of experience working with a variety of architectural companies in Texas, Utah, Nevada and Missouri. One of the projects he worked on involved developing a 35-acre site into a LEED silver-rated service center for a regional electrical company. Other projects have included police substations, a police fingerprint bureau, a 911 center, churches, a retail center, medical facilities and higher education facilities.
He has worked as an adjunct instructor for two other institutions of higher education. At the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, he was an instructor for the architectural school design studios. One of his design studio classes won a national competition sponsored by the National Organization of Minority Architects. He served as an instructor at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah, where he taught architectural design, residential design, HVAC and plumbing. He also worked with students on service learning projects, providing governmental entities with design service projects that included a city office building, university softball complex and a city park.
Mr. Sargent has also worked with the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America and YMCA.
