Candidates shall receive their membership to the Sigma Delta Mu Spanish Honor Society by applying to the Mountain View chapter of the society and meeting the qualification criteria. The only basis for selection shall be the character of the candidate, their scholastic or professional record and a genuine interest in Spanish cultures. Membership shall be conferred in strict accordance with the standards of the Association of College Honor Societies.
Each active applicant shall pay the national membership fee to be initiated. A membership certificate and pin shall be presented during the initiation ceremony (attendance is mandatory.)
Active Membership: Students are selected on the basis of high scholarship in general and a high level of attainment in the academic study of Spanish. Specifically, they must meet the following requirements:
- Each student must have studied at least one semester of Spanish, or the equivalent thereof, at the college which grants membership, with a minimum grade point average of 3.00 on a scale where "A" is assigned a value of 4.00, "B" a value of 3.00, etc.
- Each student must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 (in Spanish) on a scale where "A" is assigned a value of 4.00, "B" a value of 3.00, etc.
Inactive membership: Students interested in membership but who have not completed at least one semester of Spanish at a college level. Student must still meet the "high scholarship in general" and "high level of attainment in the academic study of Spanish" criteria.
