Kevin Kawanishi

“I was in retail management for 20 years, but I’d had enough of that lifestyle. My wife is a CPA, and she got me to thinking about switching careers to accounting.

“My accounting education was great. The small classes allowed the teachers to have the time to take an interest in each student. It was a fabulous experience, and I felt that the instructors really cared about my success.

“The best part of the experience was getting a job at the college — that was a huge advantage. I was starting to look at jobs as an accounting clerk, and a job opened up in the Accounting lab as an instructional associate. So now it’s turned out that I’m helping other students to succeed too.

“My dream job would be to teach eventually. When you can help students be successful and they come back to say thank you, it’s very, very rewarding. There’s a lot of immediate feedback in this job.”

Kevin Kawanishi earned an associate degree in accounting in 2008 and is pursuing a master’s of accounting degree at the University of Texas at Dallas. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wright State University in Ohio.
