Examples of Environmentally Preferable Products and Services

Environmentally preferable products and services have a lesser or reduced negative effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose.

Examples of environmentally preferable products are listed below:

  • Certified by third party sources (e.g. Chlorine Free Products Association, Energy Star, EPEAT, Green-e, Green Seal, Fair trade, Forest Stewardship Council, Furniture certification, Scientific Certification Systems, UL Environment (EcoLogo)TM
    etc.)
  • Characterized by reduced packaging
  • Contain post-consumer recycled content
  • Energy efficient
  • Low in embodied energy (the energy it takes to grow, extract and manufacture a product, transport it to the job site, complete the installation and finally dispose of it at the end of its life cycle)
  • Grown or manufactured locally (less than 500 miles away)
  • Non-toxic (or low in toxins)
  • Recyclable
  • Rapidly renewable (life cycle time is reduced compared to other products)
  • Water efficient

Our comparisons of products/services will consider the following:

  • Is the sustainable product/service of similar cost, quality and durability?
  • What is the total cost of ownership?
  • Does the price of the product include environmentally responsible disposal and/or take-back programs (cradle to cradle)?
  • Will the product/service help DCCCD to conserve resources, enhance operational efficiency or reduce pollution?

We prefer to work with contractors/vendors/consultants who will help us progress on our journey toward sustainability.
