Please bring at least one syllabus to work with for sustainability integration. This interactive workshop introduces ideas for incorporating sustainability in the curriculum, no matter what one's subject matter might be. Cross-disciplinary discussions among audience members will help faculty and others to identify commonalities across their curricula that might aid in creating shared assignments or projects surrounding sustainability.
About the Speaker:
Amber Raley
Amber Raley works under the Strengthening Career and Technical Education (CTE) for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V Grant) in the role of Research Analyst at Eastfield College. Through this role Amber hopes to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and move towards a more economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable world, starting right here at the DCCCD.
Amber earned a MA in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Rice University, a BA in Psychology and English at Agnes Scott College, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Urban Planning & Public Policy at the University of Texas at Arlington.
About the Speaker:
Brie Day
Brie Day has been teaching in the areas of General Biology and Environmental Biology full-time at Eastfield College since 2015, and recently won the Eastfield College "Excellence in Teaching - Piper Professor 2019-2020" Full-time Faculty of the Year award. In total, Brie has been teaching full-time at the community college level for 18 years, teaching over 28 courses in the environmental and biological sciences, and authoring A.S. transfer degrees and certificates in Environmental Studies, Marine Science, and Watersheds Resource Management, as well as a host of related courses.
Brie's academic training is in molecular evolutionary genetics and conservation ecology. Her education includes the completion of 3 years (A.B.D.) towards a Ph.D. in Environmental & Natural Resources Science: Evolutionary Molecular Genetics of Salmonids from Washington State University, Vancouver, and holds a M.S. degree in Biological Sciences: Conservation Biology/Ecology from Illinois State University and a B.S. in Biological Sciences: Ecology/Evolutionary Biology/Behavior from University of Maryland at College Park. Brie has a passion for taking on big projects that help our environment and educate students about sustainability!
About the Speaker:
Lori Delacruz Lewis
Lori Delacruz Lewis develops and implements unique projects in sustainability and resilience; manages MVC’s climate and resilience action plans and reports; creates educational programs and tools for waste reduction, curriculum resources and community workshops.
She coordinates the Keep America Beautiful/Keep Dallas Beautiful programs for her college and the on-campus early college high school; implements a GIS (Geographical Information Systems) project for the campus; and creates unique campus educational campaigns for both students and faculty throughout the year.
Lori is currently pursuing a PhD in Urban Planning and Public Policy at UTA.
Additional Accomplishments:
- Recently received Fellow of Global Citizenship from the Global Citizenship Alliance
- Earned MVC’s Innovation of the Year 2018 award for her workbook Sustainability: Designing Interdisciplinary Opportunities for Teaching
- Co-authored Feasted Landscapes: Sustainability in American Topics, two-volume supplemental textbook (Two editions; lead author on the first edition.)
- Selected to represent SMU at the Clinton Global Initiative University 2018
