Assistant City Manager James W. Childers:
James Childers joined the City of Irving in January 2018 after serving the City of Abilene for over five years as assistant city manager and as the director of community services. Prior to Abilene, James worked in the City of Dallas for seven years and various capacities and for the Town of Flower Mound for three years. He started his career as an administrative intern in the City of Denton's City Manager's Office in 2002.
Childers' breadth of knowledge in Texas municipal government can be seen through his extensive background in areas including public works, planning and zoning, and quality of life services.
As Irving's assistant city manager, Childers oversees Parks and Recreation, Library Services, Municipal Court, Information Technology, Fleet Services Division, Communications, Human Resources and the Office of Innovation and Performance for the city's nearly 240,000 residents.
Childers graduated from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas with a bachelor's degree in political science. He later earned a master's degree in public administration from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.
James and his wife Mishawn have been married for 15 years and they have four Children.
