What does a dental assistant do?

  • Sterilizes, disinfects instruments and equipment, and obtains and updates patients' dental records
  • Prepares materials for impressions and restorations, and processes dental X-rays
  • Prepares patients for treatment and works alongside dentist to provide assistance

What is the career outlook?

  • Work is in offices of dentists and may include assisting other offices
  • 40-hour work week typical, may include Saturdays or evenings depending on hours of the dental office
  • In Texas: 34 percent job growth projections through 2018; median salaries $15.21 per hour or $31,600 annually***
  • Dallas County: median salaries $16.38 per hour or $34,100 annually***
