What do you want for your child?

The opportunity to qualify for a great job?
The skills to earn a good income?
The pride that comes from being prepared to succeed in the world?

We have one of the best ways to give your child that advantage.

It's called Tech Prep (Technical Preparation), a state-funded program offered through the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) and your high school. This innovative program enables your child to earn advanced placement college credit for technical courses completed during high school. These courses can be taken, without costs, during the 11th and 12th grades, then the credits will be transferred to a two-year community college upon graduation from high school.

By starting their course work in high school, Tech Prep students:

  • Prepare for high-paying, challenging careers
  • Save money on college tuition
  • Choose a career that's right for them.

Tech Prep isn't for one type of student or one type of profession. The program is open to all high school students with a "B" average or above and a willingness to work hard. Students can sign-up for the program as early as the ninth grade, and begin to take classes during their last two years of high school.

Talk to your child about his or her interests. Whatever the passion, whatever the goal, Tech Prep has a program. With small classes conducted by experienced instructors, your child will get the hands-on experience he or she needs to succeed.
What does your child dream of doing?

If your child decides to enroll at a four-year university, the math, science and communication courses taken during high school will give him or her excellent preparation for the academic and career challenges ahead.

Give your child an advantage and save money on college tuition.

The Tech Prep program was designed to give your child a head start on his or her career and save your money on college tuition. Your student an earn up to a full semester of college credits, at no cost to you, while in high school. After high school, these credits transfer to the two-year program at the Dallas Count Community College you choose. The Tech Prep student earns an Associate Degree in less time and at less cost than the student who did not participate in the program.

Tech Prep students are eligible to compete for regional and state Tech Prep grants and scholarships, to further reduce the cost of their advanced studies. DCCCD offers several scholarships, including the Rising Star Scholarship, to students who qualify.

How can I get my child enrolled in Tech Prep?

Getting your child involved in Tech Prep is easy, but it's important that you start as soon as possible. Even as early as the ninth grade, your child can start look at programs and deciding what he or she wants to study. In the 1th and 12th grades, your child will start taking courses that will be credited toward a college education. The student can then get a head start on a high-wage, highly skilled career.

All it takes to get ahead is three simple steps.

Step One: Talk to your child's high school counselor.
Your high school has a counselor who knows all about the Tech Prep program and can help you get your child enrolled. Talk with your child and the counselor to find out more about the Career and technology Education programs that are available. After you choose a program, your counselor can help you fill out the necessary paperwork to make sure your child becomes a Tech Prep student.

Step Two: Check with your child's high school counselor before graduation.
Just before your child graduates from high school, ask your counselor to help you complete the necessary paperwork and check your child's high school transcript to make sure he or she has met all the requirements to receive his or her Tech Prep college credit. Once this step is completed, your child is on the way to college with as much as a semester's worth of college credit already completed.

Step Three: Meet with a DCCCD college advisor.
After your child graduates from high school, meet with a college advisor at the DCCCD campus of your choice. Give the advisor your child's high school transcript, along with the Tech Prep forms you completed with the high school counselor. Then, the student will declare a major in Tech Prep Associate Degree program, so the college will know your child's specific area of study and be able to assist with the selection of classes.
