American Indian mural weaves a spell of unity

  • It will be saved. Entitled "We Are One" the mural gracing the west side of El Centro's nine-story building was the dream and design of artist S.S. Sam Burrus of Pryor, Oklahoma. A mural commission selected her from seven finalists. Hired to execute the mural was Barbara Murrell, a Dallas theatrical scene and billboard painter, and part-Cherokee Indian.
  • "We are One" portrays seven American Indians upholding the Hoop of Life, a traditional native symbol of the continuity of life. Hopefully, this are can serve as a rallying point, provide the catalyst to raise our sensitivity to a higher level.
