**Registration has closed for the 2014 Be the Change event.**

Be the Change is an annual day of service where participants come together to give back to the community. Be the Change is organized by the colleges of DCCCD in the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Our 2014 Be the Change event will be hosted by the Texas Trees Foundation, an organization that works to enhance the beauty of the urban forests of Dallas.

What You’ll Do

The morning will start with an orientation and facility walkthrough. There will be a presentation about the impact the volunteers make for the Texas Trees Foundation and for the urban forests of Dallas. Volunteers will then be divided into three crews after an initial orientation. Volunteers will participate in each crew for approximately an hour after receiving a short introduction and training at each station.

Mulch Crew: Mulch is an integral part of a tree’s life. It provides nutrients and minerals for the tree and protects the tree from temperature extremes, from drought conditions and from human interaction. In the education and recreation area, the Texas Trees Foundation has nearly 4.5 acres (that’s nearly five football fields) worth of acreage that needs to be mulched. Each volunteer will spread a three- to four-inch layer on the grounds, keeping the mulch away from the trunk of the tree.

Nursery Crew: The Texas Trees Foundation grows between 500 and 1,000 trees each year, either to give away or to use in planting projects. Volunteers will weed the nursery, check the irrigation and help ensure water is getting delivered to the trees. After checking all those items, they will weed in the education and recreational area.

Beautification Crew: Clean up and special projects are ongoing at the nursery and tree farm. Volunteers will pick up trash and help with special projects, such as planting shrubs or trees, building irrigation boxes, cleaning up existing areas and helping keep everything looking great.

Lastly, all volunteers will do a quick walk-through of the entire area and pick up any tools, containers and trash.
