B. Purposes of the Workshop:

  • Building a knowledge base among community college/and public school educators on the Texas Award For Performance Excellence and the Baldrige in Education Criteria
  • Building skills among the participants to organize and implement a workforce development specific or institution wide self-assessment using the Texas Award/Baldrige criteria
  • To introduce participants to this year-long project for institutional assessment development and the virtual network support services that will be used to assist institutions in this endeavor;
  • To network with educators and other professionals who have experience in working with the criteria.

C. Evaluation

Facilitator explains evaluation and feedback desired from participants.

D. Participant responsibilities.

     1. Actively participate in discussions and group            activities.
     2.  Complete the evaluations form and turn it in.

Participants will know the name and position of all those in the session.

Participants can state the purpose of the workshop.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to develop (over the next year) a workforce development specific or institution wide assessment model using the Texas Quality/Baldrige in Education criteria.

Participants will:
  • Understand the Baldrige in Education Criteria and the Texas Award For Performance Excellence Criteria
  • Begin to organize their conceptual thinking about self assessment around the criteria domains (leadership, planning, student and stakeholder focus, information and analysis, faculty and staff focus, educational and support process management, & school performance results)
  • Understanding the levels of award application for the Texas Award For Performance Excellence
  • Be able to recount differences and similarities between the Texas Award For Performance Excellence/Baldrige in Education Criteria and SACS Accreditation Standards.

III. Why should a community college or school adopt Texas Award For Performance Excellence/Baldrige in Education criteria?

A. Show video vignette (Deming on Education). Discuss what is seen and heard.

B. Nine major reasons why a college or school needs to adopt Texas Award For Performance Excellence/Baldrige in Education criteria:

  1. Emerging forces pushing higher education change - technology and growing competition;
  2. Workforce skills sets constantly needing update - need for fast responsiveness to the customers needs;
  3. Workforce and industry needs for graduates with knowledge of the Baldrige Criteria - business advantage
  4. Increasing accountability being legislated or required from higher education;
  5. Accreditation standards - Baldrige Criteria incorporation;
  6. development of local workforce boards - pushing response
  7. ISO Standards
  8. Contribute to the vision and transformation of our colleges by developing a systematic approach to focusing on students and improving our services to them;
  9. Nurture a learning college or school via service and continuous improvement

Group Activity: (utilize the Force Field Analysis Worksheet)

  • Process the 9 reasons as driving forces
  • Find corresponding restraining forces
  • Develop your list and look towards potential strategies to overcome the restraining forces
  • Develop a 10-minute team report.
Participants will:

Understand the nine major reasons why a college needs to adopt Texas Award For Performance Excellence/ Baldrige in Education criteria for self assessment.

Add their own perspectives by processing these major "drivers" against potential restraints."

Gain experience in utilizing a group process tool, the Force Field Analysis.

  1. Focus on the lessons they have learned
  2. How they got started and how did they overcome initial restrainers
  3. Discussion of their Award Application development process
Participants will have the opportunity to dialogue with actual education practitioners using Baldrige/Texas Award Criteria for institutional self-assessment. Discussion;

Shared Understanding and insights as to how to get started.
