Dr. James H. Hughey

Dr. James Hughey has served the Dallas Independent School District for more than forty years in several roles, and was named General Superintendent by the district’s Board of Education in May, 1998, after serving as Acting General Superintendent since the preceding September. In this role, Dr. Hughey led the Dallas ISD through a year-long planning process to provide a strategic plan for the district. The Vision 2003 District Improvement Plan involved virtually every stakeholder group in the school district. This plan provided the foundation for continuous improvement for education in Dallas for the next five years.

Hughey retired as the superintendent in August, 1999, and serves the school district and the Dallas County Community College District as a consultant.

After serving in the United States Air Force from 1951 through 1955, he returned to college to earn his teaching credentials, and was employed by the Dallas ISD in January of 1956. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from East Texas State University in 1956, a master’s degree in educational administration in 1958, and an earned doctorate in education from Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1977. Dr. Hughey is married to Rebecca, and they have five children and 12 grandchildren. He was born in Point, Texas, a small East Texas farming community near Lake Tawakoni.
