Faculty Roles Project--The BasicsReview of the Faculty Roles Project For some time there has been a sense among both faculty and administrative leadership groups that policy and practice regarding "faculty roles and related infrastructure" conflict rather than complement in a few key areas. There has been a shared sense that, in these areas, a thorough review of instructional roles, instructional delivery, and related instructional infrastructure is needed. "Instructional roles," "instructional delivery," and "related instructional infrastructure" may include job descriptions, contractual status, load factors, professional development activities, and other issues that might surface during the review process. For a number of reasons, those leadership groups felt that it was time to initiate that review process. The first step in the process was the appointment, last fall, of an advisory/resource group of faculty members and administrators. This group was asked to generate initial lists of issues, concerns, and questions from faculty and administrative perspectives; to identify an outside consultant to lead this project; and to serve as a resource for the consultant in developing a statement of need, a process, and timelines. ConsultantJesse Jones was selected as the consultant and facilitator for this project. Jesse is currently President of the North Texas Community College Consortium. He has served as faculty member and academic administrator at both the community college and university, he has worked with several colleges as a consultant and facilitator on a variety of projects and topics, and he knows the District well from his fifteen years as a DCCCD instructor and administrator. Next Steps In Spring 2003, Jesse, working with the advisory/resource group and additional faculty and administrative groups, developed a statement of need, a process, and timelines. That summary document, "Review of Faculty Roles and Related Infrastructure," was shared District-wide via this web-site as pdf file located at http://www.DCCCD .edu/people/hr/hrpdf/facroles2003.pdf and also provided to each location to distribute.
During the Spring, Summer and early Fall 2003, the consultant has conducted a series of sessions at individual campuses and at the District level to identify and gather information regarding key issues and problems regarding instructional roles, instructional delivery, and instructional infrastructure (March through mid-September, 2003). Summaries of information gathering sessions are now available on-line at http://www.DCCCD .edu/people/hr/hrog/fac/facrolespro.htm
As
of mid-September, an on-line survey, asking the same questions
used in the information gathering sessions, was
placed on
the People
web site to provide DCCCD employees an additional opportunity for
input. The on-line survey is located at:
