DCCCD Student Transfers to Private Institutions
Letters were mailed to 32 private Texas institutions requesting social
security numbers of DCCCD students who transferred to those institutions
in fall 1997. Ten institutions responded and eight provided the requested
data. The social security numbers were then matched to DCCCD student records
to retrieve the following information.
General Findings
-
Students completed an average of 47 hours before transferring and were
likely to have taken one developmental course.

Transfer students to Our Lady of the Lake and Paul Quinn completed the
most hours (58 hrs) before transferring while students at Dallas Baptist
completed the fewest hours (32 hrs).

SMU enrolled more former DCCCD students than any other institution.
-
DCCCD grade point averages were highest for students who transferred to
SMU and lowest for those at Paul Quinn.
-
At time of transfer, Our Lady of the Lake students were the oldest (average
age=33 yrs, median age=30 yrs) while Baylor students were the youngest
(average age=23 yrs, median age =21 yrs).
-
Transfers by DCCCD college attended and ethnicity varied among the institutions.

Comparisons to Public Institution Transfers
-
On the average, students who transferred to a private institution completed
more hours before transferring (average=47 hrs) than did students who transferred
to a Texas public university (average=34 hrs).
-
Both groups of students were likely to have completed one developmental
course.
-
DCCCD grade point averages for public institution transfer students (average=2.99)
was lower than SMU and Baylor transfer students, but higher than the other
private institutions.
