The Associate’s Degree and Credit Certificate
Report Summary of IPEDS Data
The associate’s degree and credit certificate data
are
presented in breakdowns of ethnicity and data collection year. Tables
have
been prepared to show the number of degrees and certificates awarded to
students in July through June. Pie charts were utilized to illustrate
the
comparison of associate degrees and credit certificates by ethnicity
during
the award year to credit enrollment by ethnicity for the corresponding
fall semester.
Observations
- Since 1994-95, the number of degrees awarded has varied. Most recent data (2004-05) show a 6% increase in associate’s degrees over the prior award year. The number of credit certificates awarded has continued to increase. During 2004-05, over 1,500 students received credit certificates, a 15% increase when compared to the number of credit certificates awarded in 2003-04. (See line chart below)
- The percent of degrees awarded increased significantly for Asian, Hispanic and African American students for 2004-05 by 15%, 10%, and 7%, respectively. The percent of certificates awarded to Asian students decreased (-8%) but increased for all other groups. (See Associate’s Degree and Credit Certificate by Ethnicity tables)
- The proportion of graduates by ethnicity was similar to the proportion of students enrolled by ethnicity. (See Degrees and Certificates by Ethnicity for 2004-2005 pie charts)
Numbers are conservative because completers who did not file for graduation are excluded. Thus, students who complete all the curriculum requirements for receiving a degree or certificate, but do not file for graduation are not reflected in this data. Additionally, students who file for degrees after the official reporting date are also excluded.
