BOARD OF TRUSTEES' EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
1997-98 Indicator Reporting Overview
The 1997-98 reporting cycle completed the third rotation of reporting
on indicators related to the seven district-wide goals. This report highlights
the findings relative to each goal previously detailed in the individual
reports.
A student success model is also included which presents a broad overview
of student progress. The model addresses the supplemental forms of educational
success that occur in addition to degree completion and reveals that 98%
of credit students experienced one or more successful educational outcomes.
Goal 1: Career and Transfer Preparation
-
Of the credit students who did not return in fall, 89% were employed and/or
seeking additional education at a Texas public higher education institution.
-
The 11,171 former DCCCD students who enrolled in a Texas public university
last fall represented a 12% increase over the prior year.
-
The 2,597 degrees and certificates awarded in 1996-97 were up 11% from
1992-93.
Goal 2: Continuing Education
-
The majority of continuing education contact hours, generated by workforce
training courses, increased 40% over the last five years.
-
Over 28% of the 66,408 continuing education students in 1996-97, had enrolled
in at least one continuing education course in the prior three years.
Goal 3: Basic Skills
-
Most (81%) ESL instruction was offered through continuing education, where
enrollments increased 166% from 1992-93 to 1996-97.
-
The 16,600 students enrolled in ESL instruction represented 7% of the non-English
speaking Dallas county adult population.
-
Fifty-six percent of developmental math, 70% of developmental writing and
56% of developmental reading students who retested, passed the corresponding
TASP section.
-
Students who completed a developmental course had higher success rates
in a related college-level course than their classmates without the developmental
course.
Goal 4: Distance Learning
-
Enrollments in telecourses continued to account for the vast majority (86%)
of distance learning enrollments, yet enrollments in on-line courses were
increasing at a high rate.
-
While distance learning courses represented only 3-5% of total course offerings,
25% of all graduates had successfully completed one or more distance learning
courses.
Goal 5: Access
-
The combined credit and non-credit student body was similar to the adult
county population for Hispanic and African-American residents, lower than
the Anglo population and higher than the Asian population.
-
Using a success rate defined as retained students plus non-returning students
who left in academic good standing, the fall to spring success rates were
89% for full-time and 86% for part-time students.
Goal 6: Economic Development
-
A total of 246 businesses contracted $3,835,573 for customized training
of 18,670 individuals last year. Of those businesses, 65% were repeat contract
training customers.
-
By the completion dates of six Skills Development Grants, 1,492 jobs will
have been created and 303 jobs retained.
Goal 7: Citizenship
-
Approximately 10,000 students district-wide, attended college diversity
awareness programs in 1997-98.
-
Almost 85% of students who attended these events and completed a survey
indicated the event either improved or greatly improved their knowledge
of the particular topic area.
-
98% of these students also indicated that "campus events such as this have
enhanced my ability to interact in a multi-cultural society" either some
or a great deal.
Student Success Summary

Note: Student counts of educational outcomes are duplicative.
For example, a student who graduated and transferred to another institution
would be counted twice.
