2001-02 Basic Skills – English as a Second Language (ESL)
Goal 3: DCCCD students will acquire basic literacy skills and developmental education to live more functionally and become ready to participate successfully in college-level curricula.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and English as a Second
Language (ESL) programs help students prepare for an academic degree or
improve their English skills for the workplace. Multiple instructional
options are available to best address individual goals. To simplify discussion,
both credit and continuing education courses are referred to collectively
as ESL in this report.

District-wide Indicators:
The 19,430 ESL students enrolled in 2000-01 reflected a 12% increase in ESL students over the prior year. Contact hours increased at an even higher rate with continuing education hours +19% and credit hours +15%. ESL students made up 14% of the total 2000-01 DCCCD student population. In comparison, 9% of the county adult population indicated they do not speak English "well" or "at all."1 Students continue to achieve high course retention (92% non-withdraw) and success (71% A, B, C) rates in credit ESL courses. If "E" grades2, which indicate continuing progress are also considered, the success rate approaches 82%. |
