
2000-2001 Basic Skills – English as a Second Language (ESL)
Goal 3: DCCCD students will acquire basic literacy skills and developmental
education to live more functionally and become ready to participate successfully
in college-level curricula.

Students have high completion (93% non-withdraw) and success rates (73%
grades A, B, C) in ESL courses. Furthermore, former ESL students are also
successful in college-level courses. A study of Fall 2000 students enrolled
in Math, English, Government and History courses revealed that former ESL
students had lower course withdraw rates (21% vs. 25%) and higher success
rates (69% vs. 61%) than students with no prior ESL instruction.
