1999-2000 Citizenship Report



Goal 7:  Citizenship

DCCCD students will acquire knowledge and skills needed to succeed in and contribute to a global community, to understand the value of lifelong learning, and to exercise their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

This year’s report is a continuation of Service Learning (SL) related student activities first reported in 1998-99. "Service Learning is an instruction methodology that combines academic coursework with community service. It focuses on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility." 1

Student participants in the DCCCD SL Program are required to

Approximately 1,222 students (58% of those who initially indicated an interest) fulfilled all SL program requirements during Fall 1999 and Spring 2000 semesters. These students completed 23,158.5 volunteer hours and averaged 19 hours per student. At a minimum wage rate, these hours are equivalent to a contribution of $119,266 in community service.

While engaged in community activities, SL students are also committed to pursuing their education and achieve above average retention rates. For example, 75% of Fall 1999 SL students returned the spring semester compared to 60% for all credit students.
