DCCCD BOARD OF TRUSTEES' INDICATOR REPORT
2000-01 Citizenship
Goal 7: DCCCD students will acquire knowledge and skills needed to succeed in and contribute to a global community, to understand the value of lifelong learning, and to exercise their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
In addition to updated Service Learning (SL) information, student government and clubs are detailed as requested by the Board of Trustees in September 2000. A summary of college efforts to increase student and community political awareness is also presented.
Students develop academic skills and a sense of civic responsibility
while meeting community needs through SL programs. Participants are required
to volunteer at least 15 hours at a participating agency and complete instructor
assigned projects. The 1,434 students who completed SL program requirements
in Fall 2000/Spring 2001, represented increases of 17% in participation
and 43% in volunteer hours over the prior year. The average number of volunteer
hours per student exceeded the required 15 hour minimum at all colleges.
In total, students contributed 33,227 hours of community service or the
equivalent of $171,119 at a minimum wage rate.

Activities to increase student and community political awareness were numerous and occurred throughout the District. As done in previous presidential election years, almost all colleges reported hosting voter registration drives and campaigns. Locally and nationally known speakers took part in educating students via panel discussions, debates, presentations and "meet the candidates" receptions. (Many of these activities were open for the public to attend as well.) Students also learned about the democratic process through travel to such conferences as the Texas Junior College Student Government Association in Austin and the Washington DC Leadership Experience.
