-- Employer satisfaction with student preparation for the workplace
Degrees and Certificates

While the overall number of credit awards has remained fairly constant over the last decade, the award "mix" has shifted in recent years as credit certificates increased and 2-year degrees slightly decreased.

In addition to the 754 credit certificates in 2000-01, another 352 THECB-approved certificates were conferred in continuing education programs1 bringing the total state-recognized certificates awarded to 1,106.

Licensure Examinations

Although limited data are available through the THECB on licensure exam results, some areas are reported. The 1997-2000 DCCCD student average pass rate for Law Enforcement related exams was 64% compared to a state average of 61%. Both the DCCCD and state average pass rates for Nursing related exams for this period was 89%. While not reported by the THECB, additional data provided by CVC showed a 100% pass rate for 22 students attempting the Texas Examination for Registered Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Technician National Examination in 2000-01.

University Transfers

A similar number of students transferred to universities in Fall 2000 as had the previous fall semester. The University of North Texas, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Arlington remain the top transfer institutions.

Source: THECB Automated Student and Adult Learner Follow-Up System. Transfer numbers reflect students who were at a DCCCD college during the 1999-00 academic year and enrolled in a 4-year public institution Fall 2000.

Historically, research studies with the University of North Texas, Texas A & M - Commerce, University of Texas - Arlington, have shown DCCCD transfer students to be academically competitive with native university students. This success is underscored by the fact that most native university students meet an academic admissions standard while the District open admission policy welcomes students at all skill levels. Transfer data indicate that students who first enroll in the DCCCD not yet prepared for college-level work, are able to develop the needed skills to later transfer. Almost 30% of DCCCD students who transferred to a university in Fall 2000 were previously enrolled in developmental studies while at one of the District colleges.

Employer Follow-Up

As previously reported, most (94%) of the 97 surveys returned by employers of DCCCD students indicated the "DCCCD is successfully preparing students for the workplace." In addition, employers (78%) agreed that an associate degree or certificate was likely to increase an employee’s chance for advancement.

Notes:

1 Additional awards/certifications are also directly and indirectly associated with continuing education instruction. Colleges grant local achievement awards to students who complete specified series of continuing education courses.  Students prepare for industry-approved certifications (i.e., Microsoft, Cisco, etc.) by completing various continuing education courses although certification is external to the District.

Employer follow-up survey was last conducted Summer 2001.

Prepared by District Office of Research, April 2002.
