The Legislative Budget Board measures student retention as the percent of contact hours completed in fall semester-length credit courses. The DCCCD retention rate of 78% (up from 76% in Fall 1999) is similar to the Texas Peer Group rate of 79%. District first-time-in-college (FTIC) students had a retention rate of 80% (up from 77% in Fall 1999).
Another view of retention allows one to answer the question, "What percentage of students enrolled at the beginning of the semester are still enrolled at the end of the semester?" In response, 86% of all fall credit students and 89% of FTIC students remain through semester end.
A final measure of retention addresses the percent of students who return the following semester. The percentage of fall credit students who return in spring (63%) is similar to prior years. FTIC students have a slightly higher fall to spring retention rate of 66%.
