Dr. S.M. Wright, Sr. Rising Star Memorial Scholarship

The Reverend Dr. S. M. Wright, Sr. Rising Star Memorial Scholarship fund was established to assist high school graduates with their college education. Reverend Wright was one of the city’s key civil rights leaders and Pastor of Peoples Missionary Baptist Church for over 37 years. He was known for his ability to unite all ethnic groups in Dallas, while working to bridge the gap between races. He was praised for helping to prevent race riots that hit other major cities during the 1960’s. It was because of his long-standing efforts in this arena that he became the first African-American to have a Dallas freeway named in his honor. A four-mile stretch of state highway 175 between U.S. Highway and Loop 12 is now known as S. M. Wright Freeway.
