The R. L.
Thornton, Jr. Scholarship pays tribute to the remarkable Dallas leader
whose impressive work in establishing and overseeing the growth and development
of the Dallas County Community College District and the DCCCD Foundation
in the early years has left anenduring legacy for the Dallas community.

Eligibility
Criteria
Applicants
must be able to demonstrate leadership through involvement in academic,
church and/or community-based activities. Applicants must also demonstrate
scholarship with a 3.0 GPA or better and by participating in activities
such as honors society involvement, academic club memberships, or
enrolling in academically vigorous course work.
Applicants
who are the first in his or her family to attend college will be
given preference in the selection process.

Process
Applicants
must submit the following to the financial Aid office at the college
they wish to attend.:
- Complete
a scholarship
application form
- A
one-page essay describing why he or she deserves this scholarship.
Essay should include leadership and academic qualifications.
- One
letter of recommendation from a high school or college counselor
or mentor
Selection
Process
- Phase
I - Financial Aid Director at each college submits applications
of top five candidates to the Foundation Office.
- Phase
II - Foundation Scholarship Committee determines final winners.
Recipient
Requirements
Recipients
must successfully complete nine credit hours per semester and maintain
a 3.0 GPA. Failure to meet these requirements could result in a
reduction or loss of scholarship benefits.
Deadline
For
application: Second week of April to Financial Aid Office.
Finalist application to Foundation: Second week of May.
Notification to students: Third week of July.
