Carole Rolnick Shlipak Scholarship

The Carole Rolnick Shlipak Endowment Fund was established to honor her dedication as DCCCD director of Development and DCCCD Foundation Executive Vice President from 1979 to 1994. The Carole Rolnick Shlipak Scholarship is awarded to students who have gone from average or less than average grades to outstanding scholastic experience during their educational experience at a DCCCD campus. These students may have started college without a clear focus or goal, but after enrolled experienced a turnaround in their academic studies and are now striving diligently to excel. Not only are these students excelling academically, they are also serving in leadership or service roles through their involvement in campus or community organizations.

Up to $1,000 per academic year ($500 per semester)

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must enroll in a minimum of nine credit hours. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or better and must have already completed at least one semester at a DCCCD college. Applicants must also have experienced a turnaround in their education as evidenced by an improvement in grades and involvement in college or community organizations while enrolled in the DCCCD.

Application Process
Applicants must submit the following to the Financial Aid Office at the college they wish to attend:
  • Completed DCCCD Foundation scholarship application form
  • One letter of recommendation from a DCCCD faculty or staff member
  • One-page typed essay describing applicant's turnaround experience - essay should be written according to the following guidelines:
    1. What caused you to turn around your educational achievement, to progress from average grades to superior scholastic achievement? Please explain.
    2. What are your educational goals? How do you plan to fulfill them?
    3. What are your career goals? How do you plan to fulfill them?
    4. In what college or community organizations are you involved? How do you see this involvement as helping you in your educational and/or career goals?
    5. How do you plan to coordinate your responsibilities -- family, education, work, etc. -- to ensure that you will meet your educational goals

Selection Process

  • Phase I - Financial Aid or SPAR Office forwards applications of top five candidates to the Foundation Office.
  • Phase II - Foundation Scholarship Committee determines the final winners.

Recipient Requirements
Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Failure to do so could result in a reduction or loss of scholarship benefits.

Deadline
For application: Second week of April to Financial Aid Office.
Finalist applications to Foundation Office: Second week of May.
Notification to students: Third week of July.
