Ann Priest Writing Scholarship

The Ann Priest Writing Scholarship is a talent-based writing scholarship to encourage creative expression, joy in the written word, and the value of writing as a way to learn and communicate. This scholarship will be awarded to students who love the written word and have shown talent and promise in creative writing, journalistic writing, or writing for mind-body-spirit wellness.

Eligibility Criteria
Restricted to Richland College students meeting the stated scholarship criteria and enrolled in a fall or spring semester-length class.  Students must have completed one semester at Richland College, have demonstrated that they have writing talent, enjoy the written word, and value writing as a way to learn and communicate.

Application Process 
Faculty members will recommend from their classes deserving students who meet the scholarship criteria.

Interested students may also apply for scholarship funds by securing an e-mail or letter recommendation from an instructor. Applicants must complete a DCCCD Foundation Application available in the Richland College Financial Aid Office.

A student applying for the scholarship must also submit for review and consideration by the Scholarship Review Committee a 1000-2000 word prose writing sample, or two journalism articles, or up to five poems with an upper limit of 30 lines per poem or a total of 150 lines recently written this semester or during the previous semester.

The writing submission must be formatted in 12-point type and double-spaced with one-inch margins. The writing sample must also include a cover page indicating the student's name, student I.D. number, home address, and home phone number. Each internal page of the writing sample should only include the student's I.D. number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. 

Scholarship applications will be accepted in the fall for consideration for a spring scholarship and in the spring for consideration for a fall scholarship.
                                                                                                               
If you would like to have your writing submission considered for publication in Parallax, the Richland College literary magazine, please indicate your permission in a separate note attached to your application. 

Recipient Requirements
Recipients must have successfully completed a minimum of 6 credit hours in a semester prior to the one in which they are making application and maintain a 2.5 GPA or better.

Deadline
Complete application materials must be submitted to Janet James, Dean/Executive Assistant to the President, Alamito Hall, Room A218, by Friday, April 24, 2009 at 5 p.m.
