The Rising Star Program endowment campaign received an award under
the category of development projects and major gifts campaign in the 2002
Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District IV Awards
competition. Winners were recognized at a reception and ceremony on April
8 at the CASE District IV Conference in Oklahoma City. CASE, comprising
a membership of 3,200 higher education institutions, is an international
association that supports educational institutions by enhancing the effectiveness
of alumni relations, communications and fund-raising professionals who
serve them.
DCCCD Trustee Charletta Compton has been appointed to the Association
of Community College Trustees Public Policy Committee. Her first meeting
was held last February with the Legislative Conference in Washington,
D.C.
Dr.
Herlinda (Linda) Coronado was recently named president of North Lake
College. Her appointment was approved by the DCCCD board of trustees in
January. Dr. Coronado replaces Dr. David England, who is now president
and chief executive officer of Des Moines Area Community College in Iowa.
Dr. Coronado, who previously served as vice president for student learning
at Richland College, brings 27 years of community college teaching and
administrative experience to her new role as president.
Valerie
Freeman, vice chairman of the DCCCD Foundation board, was featured
in an article in the March 29-April 4 issue of the Dallas Business Journal
regarding the creation of a $10 million venture fund to invest in companies
that are owned or operated by women. Ms. Freeman, CEO of the Imprimus
Group, is co-founder of Dallas Women Angels, a group that created the
venture fund and seeks to encourage more women to become entrepreneurs.
The Dallas Women Ventures Fund, L.P., is the only such investment vehicle
in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and one of only a handful nationwide.

Centro College President Wright L. Lassiter, Jr., now serves on
the advisory board for the National Endowment for the Humanities. The
U.S. Senate recently confirmed President Bush's nomination of Dr. Lassiter
to the board, which awards grants to universities to study all disciplines
of the humanities.
Congratulations to Cedar Valley College President Carol Spencer
and Eastfield College President Rodger Pool for receiving the Shirley
B. Gordon award. They will receive the award at the Phi Theta Kappa National
Convention in Nashville, Tennessee in April. This award recognizes the
promotion of Phi Theta Kappa goals locally and internationally, and only
a few presidents receive this award each year.
DCCCD Foundation Executive Director Betheny Reid spent a day with
the presidents and chief advancement officers of the 23 community colleges
in the state of Virginia at the Virginia Community College System (VCCS)
Presidents and Chief Development Officers Conference last March. She was
asked to present the Rising Star Program and other Foundation initiatives.
DCCCD Chancellor Bill Wenrich and Foundation Executive Director
Betheny Reid were presenters in a special workshop on fundraising
in higher education during the League for Innovation's 2002 conference
in Boston in mid-March. Trustees Kitty Boyle, Pattie Powell,
and Jeff Binford also attended the conference, which gathers higher
education leaders throughout the world. Dr. Wenrich also chaired the general
session during the conference.
