Construction Contracting Committee

The Construction Contracting Committee has discussed several ways to increase contractor availability and capability. At one of the committee meetings, representatives from the American General Contractors Association and the Hispanic General Contractors Association were present to provide insight to the major issues/barriers their members face in construction contracting with DABD agencies. From their input and discussion among the committee members, the following strategies have been established:

• Develop a mentor program in area schools to target students interested in construction trades.
• Develop a more simplified and uniform contracting process among the agencies.
• Develop a joint surety support program.
• Plan a joint A&D Study.
• Explore strategies to grow capable construction firms from sub contractors to prime contractors.
• Coordinate upcoming bid schedules/ openings to prevent overloading of contractors and encourage more competitive bids.

Developing a web-based database of sub contractors that includes information on availability, work capabilities and qualifications is also an area the committee will explore. The web site will provide a "one-stop shop" for contractors to become certified and registered, find upcoming contracting opportunities and access standardized forms.
