Adult Basic Education Parent Presentations
DORCE works with Dallas ISD and its Adult Basic Education programs to visit the classroom and present on the various educational opportunities offered by the DCCCD. Presentations are customized based on number of participants and are offered in bilingual format when appropriate. Presentations are coordinated by the department of Outreach, Recruitment and Community Engagement and each individual instructor or Community Liaison representative.

African American Read-In
The African American Read-In is an annual month-long project presented in support of increasing literacy and commemorating African American heritage during February (Black History Month).  The kick-off special event includes an originally-staged production focusing on the importance and power of reading while incorporating literary and poetic works from classic and emerging African and African American writers.  There is something for everyone from every culture to learn and for family members of all ages to enjoy.  Participants include students, teachers, local personalities (media, educational, political leadership, etc.), national authors, performance artists of every description and actors.  The 2010 production - entitled “Leaders Are Readers!”  - will be held at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas on Saturday, February 6, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m.

African American Male Academic Bowl
This is an annual scholar’s tournament for African American males in grades 4th-7th from around the DFW Metroplex. This is a single elimination tournament with teams competing against each other answering questions amongst various categories. This day will also be filled with receptions and workshop sessions reflecting on college readiness, financial literacy, etc.

America’s Night Out Against Crime
This event is hosted in various communities to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support in local anti-crime programs, and strengthen community partnerships. DCCCD shows its support by hosting an Information table as well as offer in-kind donations to support the educational needs of local student participants.  DCCCD participation in such community events is by community invitations and availability.

Target: Dallas local communities and surrounding areas.

Asian Festival
An annual event sponsored by the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce to celebrate Asian Heritage Month. DCCCD has been one of the sponsors since 2003. The event draws over 15,000 people of all ethnic groups in the Metroplex.

College STEPS
College STEPS (Services to Educate Parents & Students) is a partnership between Dallas ISD and DORCE.  The Mother/Daughter and Father/Son Program, coordinated by Dallas ISD, consists of more than 300 6th grade student participants.  College STEPS is a program made up of seven one-day events hosted at various DCCCD campuses.  Each event invites 48 students and 25 parents to participate in a student or parent track with information on preparing for college at an early age.  The event emphasizes the importance of higher education both to parents and students, knowing the great influence a parent has on a child's decision at an early age.

Dallas Concilio College Day
DCCCD partners with the Dallas Concilio in an effort to increase parent involvement in the DISD schools and continue the involvement into college. Parent involvement is a key factor in student success. Parents influence their children’s decision-making regarding which college they will attend. Fall and Spring parent visits to the DCCCD campuses. Parents participate in workshops designed to educate them about the college system and higher education opportunities available to them and their children.

Target: Parents graduating from the nine week Dallas Concilio program.

Dallas Rotary Club’s Camp Enterprises
Camp Enterprise College Night is a college fair for 120 of the top students (top 10% in their class and SAT) in DISD in hosted at the Rotary Club's Camp Enterprise weekend.  Camp Enterprise is an intensive three-and-a-half-day seminar, sponsored by the Dallas Rotary Club, which explores business issues for a select group of high school seniors while interacting with business executives, politicians, union leaders, and government representatives. Dallas County Community College District hosts an information table at this event during their college fair.

Dia de la Familia
DCCCD forms partnerships with business and organizations to annually sponsor Dia de la Familia at any of the seven colleges. The event provides opportunities and possibilities for the Hispanic community to empower themselves with the knowledge of how to access a college education. There are activities for the whole family, booths hosted by local businesses and nonprofit organizations. Each campus also showcases the many programs they offer by having College Departments host their own Information Tables and Sessions. This event is usually held each year in April and the hosting DCCCD campus alternates yearly.

Feria de Salud
The FERIA DE SALUD is a family orientated event that provides health care education and free medical screening services to approximately 5000 uninsured and low-income individuals.  These services include: glucose testing for diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, HIV, immunizations, mammograms, and dental and eye exams.  The event is sponsored by the Hispanic Community Advisory Council and is usually held at the Dallas Market Center.  It offers nonprofit organizations and educational entities an opportunity to provide information. DCCCD offers information about educational opportunities through a table set up.

Festival Hispano de la Salud
Latino Wellness Fair is a family orientated event, with attendance of about 5000 people. The event is sponsored by the American Heart Association at Fair Park. The event offers free health screening to low income families, specifically the Latino community. It also provides information for illness prevention and promotes good health. The event offers the nonprofit organizations and educational entities to provide educational information to this group. DCCCD offers information about educational opportunities through a table set up.

Girls, Inc.
Girls, Inc. is a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.  It provides vital educational programs to girls, particularly those in high-risk, underserved areas.  DORCE partners with Girls, Inc. through the College/Career Readiness Board and participates with Girls Inc. to provide age appropriate activities to assist young women in pursuing their college and/or career aspirations.

Target: Females, ages 6-18 who participate in the programs at six Girls, Inc. locations in Dallas county.

Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce – Stars on Rise Scholarship program
Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has fostered the Stars on the Rise program. The program helps shape the future of over 100 students throughout the Dallas County by helping them afford a college education through a variety of monetary scholarships. The Dallas County Community College District provides a total of seven in-kind scholarships of $1400 per student and is recognized as one of their major scholarship contributors. The Hispanic Chamber sets the scholarship requisites. DORCE initiates and maintains communication with the Hispanic Chamber to coordinate dispersion of funds through the District Foundation office.

Harambee
The Harambee Festival began in 1974 amid concerns that door-to-door Halloween trick-or-treating had become dangerous because of spoilers who were contaminating children's candy in the South Dallas/Fair Park area.  Harambee, which means “let’s pull together”, was designed to draw families and the community together in one safe place during the Halloween weekend.  It was designed to promote unity and cultural appreciation by providing information on education, health, as well as entertainment.  Harambee is a free event traditionally held the last Saturday in October in South Dallas at the Martin Luther King Center.  In support of the event, DORCE staffs a table with volunteers from across the district.

Kwanzaa Fest
Kwanzaa Fest is marketed as the largest, free, cultural event of its kind in the Southwest that emancipates, educates and brings enterprise to the African American community.  It targets the entire family and includes a Healthfest, debate competition, live entertainment, KidFest, giveaways and exhibitors.  In support of the event, DORCE staffs a table with volunteers from across the district.  This year’s event is scheduled for the weekend of December 12-13 at the Automobile Building in Fair Park.

Las Llaves del Éxito: Una Feria de Educación para la Familia
(The Keys to Success: A College Fair for Families)

Area colleges and universities – in partnership with the Dallas County Community College District, the Dallas Independent School District, the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and several community-based organizations have organized a one-day education conference for families in Dallas County. The conference is free and open to the public, but will have bilingual sessions targeting the Latino community and will be conducted with concurrent sessions on accessing the K-16 educational systems. This conference is held once during the Fall Semester and once during the Spring Semester.

Mentors in Motion (MIM)
Mentors in Motion (MIM) is a coalition of area nonprofits that work together to increase awareness of and participation in mentoring programs. DORCE participates with MIM as sponsors of events and activities, providing workshops on college preparation and financial aid, and including MIM at DCCCD events and activities when possible.

Project Still I Rise Inc. - Project Manhood Institute
The Academy concept is an initiative designed to address the growing need for working with African-American male students with a multi-faceted/holistic and neighborhood-based approach.  The Academy will operate from a holistic approach that will focus on five major components: academic, socio-behavioral, community support, parental involvement and culture.

Student Success Summit
An annual event organized by the Dallas iMedia Network.  Its purpose is to encourage middle and high school students to stay in school as well as to expose them to the world of filming and broadcasting.

TRAC (Transition Resource Action Center)
DORCE partners with TRAC, a center designed to help young people transitioning from foster care to independent living access benefits and resources. The foster care system will pay for all of their higher education through tuition waivers with no limit if they activate the waiver by age 21. DORCE supports TRAC at their annual conference and with presentations to life skills classes and caseworkers on DCCCD programs and services, providing Rising Star and other financial aid information, and defining options for students to activate their tuition waiver as soon as possible.

Target: Youth in the foster care system in the North Texas area, ages 15-24.

Tulisoma: South Dallas Book Fair and Arts Festival
Tulisoma, which means “we read” in Swahili, is a community-based literary festival to promote literacy and the arts in the South Dallas/Fair Park area.  The goal of Tulisoma is to encourage literacy by creating a dynamic event tailored to engage local families, avid readers, aspiring writers and visitors to the city.  The DCCCD’s African American Read-In program has partnered with Tulisoma since its inception in 2003.  The festival is a free event traditionally held the last three days (Friday-Sunday) in August at the African American Museum and other South Dallas/Fair Park locations.  In support of the event, DORCE staffs a table with volunteers from across the district.

University Crossroads
A collaboration of colleges and universities across North Texas network together to provide comprehensive outreach services and "one stop shopping" for college readiness programs.  Members work together to promote the partnership to the public and to other institutions, and participate in numerous organized events.  DORCE assists University Crossroads and Dallas ISD counselors by providing presentations and information regarding DCCCD.

Target: Parents and youth across the metroplex preparing for college.

Visions: The Women’s Expo
This two-day event celebrating women’s needs and issues is brought to the public by Adjuvant Expos each August. The DCCCD has purchased a booth for several years, providing DCCCD promo items and educational information to the thousands of visitors at the expo. The DCCCD booth is paid for by Marketing and Communications; DORCE sets up the booth and staffs it with volunteers from across the district.

Target: The event is specifically marketed to women of all ages.

Viva Dallas - Expo
The Hispanic Expo is a comprehensive and multifaceted consumer products and services exposition that will provide exhibitors an opportunity to connect face-to-face with thousands of potential customers in an exciting, professional, and fun-filled atmosphere. The Hispanic Expo will also provide a venue for cultural awareness through a wide range of cultural activities for the entire family to enjoy. The event is held at the Dallas Market Hall and has reached a participation level of 25,000 people.  DORCE coordinates an information table with various campus representatives.
