Visions of Excellence - New Faculty Orientation

What is the Visions of Excellence Program?

Visions of Excellence (VOE) is a faculty orientation program designed to orient new faculty to the culture of the DCCCD, to ensure that they enter the classroom with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver excellence in teaching and learning and to create opportunities to learn from and with outstanding DCCCD faculty.

The 48-hour orientation program offers a variety of learning activities and consists of a three-day retreat as well as seven workshops that occur throughout the academic year, most often on the fourth Friday of the month.

Who should attend?

The VOE program is open to all new full-time faculty. Retreats are held twice each year, usually in August and January.  If you are a new full-time DCCCD faculty and have not received information regarding the VOE program, please contact us so that you can be added to the VOE email group.

What are the benefits for me?

In addition to gaining valuable information and building relationships that will enhance your contributions as a member of the DCCCD faculty, participants successfully completing the program will receive a Certificate of Completion.

How do I register?

To register for a VOE Retreat, complete the online registration form.

While it is not necessary to register for 4th Friday sessions, participants are asked to subscribe to email notices about 4th Friday sessions. If you do not receive an email announcing 4th Friday sessions, please contact us so that you can be added to the current VOE email group.

When are classes held?

VOE Retreats are held twice per year usually in August and January.

4th Friday workshops are conducted on a variety of topics throughout the academic calendar, most often on the 4th Friday of the month.

4th Friday activities offer work with Learning Exchange Networks (LENs) modules as well as workshops which draw on the various expertise of district faculty. Newer DCCCD faculty members have the opportunity to meet outstanding faculty from across the district and to establish networks, allowing them to draw on the experience and talents of colleagues.

4th Friday sessions are hosted by a different college/location, familiarizing faculty with district colleges other than their own. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to meet with the college leadership and gain information regarding the college’s culture and special programs.

4th Friday sessions and topics are scheduled as follows:

  • September 28, 2007 — Classroom Management
  • October 26, 2007 — Teaching and Learning Styles
  • November 30, 2007— Diversity
  • January 25, 2008 — Learning Strategies and Technology
  • February 15, 2008 — Assessment Techniques
  • March 28, 2008 — “You Asked for It”
  • April 25, 2008 — Celebrating Successes

Who will do the training?

All instructors are excellent facilitators who have extensive experience in the subject area. They are:

  • College faculty
  • College staff
  • OD staff that have the appropriate training

Program Objectives

The overarching goal of the VOE new faculty orientation is to comply with the DCCCD Board of Trustees Strategic Plan Goal #2 of Employee Success. In order to achieve this goal the VOE new faculty orientation program has designed four key components:
