Career Institute: Instructional Administrator

What is the Instructional Administrator Institute?

The Instructional Administrator Institute is a component of the Career Institutes.  The institute complies with the Board of Trustees Strategic Plan Goal #2, Employee Success.

The institute is designed to prepare future administrators in the instructional area enabling them to further enhance their skill set.  It consists of a series of nine (9) sessions offered over a year-long period.

Who should attend?

The specific audience includes newly-appointed deans. Additionally, the institute is open to faculty, professional support staff, and entry level administrators who meet the minimum credential requirements to assume the position of dean, executive dean, or associate dean in the DCCCD.

What are the benefits for me?

In addition to gaining valuable information that will enhance your skills as an administrator, participants successfully completing the course will receive the Instructional Administrator Certificate of Mastery.

This certificate, an internal DCCCD recognition of completion, is offered to participants who successfully complete the requirements of the insititute, and aims to prepare future administrators to support the instructional area of a college and to further enhance the skill sets of current administrations.

Topics

To provide specific training in areas related to the position of instructional administrator at DCCCD, the following topics have been developed by the Certificate Committee. This checklist has been shared with each college’s deans, deans’ councils, and groups on each campus who are currently deans.

The current topic categories include:

  • Logistics/Operations
  • Leadership
  • Human Relations
  • Institutional Effectiveness
  • DCCCD Organizational Culture

How do I register?

Completion of an application is required prior to being accepted into the program. This form includes an opportunity for the college president and vice president to nominate individuals for the program. Final selection of participants is determined by the college president and vice president. For more registration information, contact us.

When are classes held?

In order to provide as comprehensive and in-depth review of the essential skills for the position of dean, executive dean, or associate dean a series of nine (9) sessions over a year-long period will be conducted.

Sessions are one to two days in length and offered in two parts. Part I provides an overview, background, and formative information while Part II offers a review of specific policies and substantive procedures. See our sequence of classes (PDF - 130KB).

Who will do the training?

All instructors are excellent facilitators who have extensive experience in the subject area. They are:

  • Internal experts among the DCCCD faculty and staff
  • Human Organizational Development staff that have the appropriate certification as trainers
  • Outside consultants and facilitators

Program Objectives

The overall objectives of the program are:

  • To develop current and potential administrators.
  • To offer opportunities to current and potential administrators for continuous improvement in their role to support instruction.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the Instructional Administrator Institute and the outcomes through the success of the participants in the program.
