Purpose:
  • Not to exceed three (3) days at any one time for immediate family members – this benefit can be used multiple times during a benefit year (defined as September through August.) It is not intended to be used for multiple times during the same episode of critical illness.
  • Critical illness leave cannot be repeated for another three (3) days paid leave, unless the person for whom the first leave was granted has been released from the hospital, and the employee has returned to work prior to the second occurrence of critical illness.
  • If an employee were approved to use more than the three (3) days of critical illness leave, a decision regarding Family Medical Leave would be required.
  • Critical illness leave and Bereavement episodes must be separated by at least one day of employee’s work in order to be awarded at multiples of three (3) days.
Eligibility:

Critical Illness – general definition requires emergency or otherwise unplanned, in patient hospital stay. Sometimes described as “life threatening.” 

"Immediate family" means spouse, child, father, father-in-law, mother, mother-in-law, sister, brother, grandchild, grandparent of the employee, or other person who occupies a position of similar significance in the family of the employee.
