HROG Section:Employment
Document Title:Adjunct Faculty
Initial Date Posted:Feb. 1, 2005
Approved by CCAB Jan. 24, 2005
Last Date Revised:Fall 2006
Source:District Human Resources
Related TASB Policy:DD (local)
Purpose:Because the colleges can use adjunct faculty to fill a variety of teaching needs, the purpose of this HROG is to highlight the main points surrounding the scope of adjunct faculty employment.
Definitions:Board Policy DD (local) defines adjunct instructor as "a person employed as a part-time faculty member."
Eligibility:

Adjunct faculty will hold the following minimum requirements:

  • For credit classes transferable towards a higher degree: master's degree and 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline.
  • For workforce education degree or certificate courses: a combination of academic preparation and work experience, including three years of direct or related work experience other than teaching. (Reference: HROG and Chapter Two General Institutional and Personnel Requirements for Workforce Education Programs. The Coordinating Board Guidelines for Instructional Programs in Workforce Education.)
  • For developmental courses: bachelor's degree in the specific teaching discipline and demonstrated competency (i.e., teaching experience, honors, graduate course work or other related accomplishment). Reference: http://www.sacscoc.org/pdf/PrinciplesOfAccreditation.PDF.
Procedures:

1. Adjunct faculty are hired with no posted search (unless requested by the location) and may be recruited from a variety of sources including:

a. Personal referrals
b. Campus and district job fairs
c. Through the adjunct faculty database, etc.

2. Adjunct faculty teaching in credit classes may teach up to 14.7 clock hours each week on campus (49% of a full-time instructor's workload). A part-time instructor's workload shall include preparing for and teaching assigned classes, providing consultation to students, conducting examinations and submitting grades to the college. Like a full-time instructor, activities may vary for non-traditional instruction. The college shall compensate part-time instructors for additional activities as assigned.  In emergency or unusual circumstances, exceptions to load may be requested by the Instructional Dean/Instructional Division Chair with approval granted by Vice President/President as per usual college procedures. In these cases, the adjunct status changes to temporary full-time employment, and Board approval is necessary. Experience earned in this capacity is not transferable toward fulfilling requirements toward a multiyear faculty contract.

In all situations of adjunct faculty, employment shall not increase the load of part-time employees so as to become full-time employees through the combined use of supplemental load and community service courses.

3. Adjunct faculty who are interested in full-time teaching opportunities are not eligible to participate in the internal faculty transfer option, but may apply for any full-time teaching position advertised through the regular notice of vacancy process.

4. Adjunct faculty are not eligible for summer formula.

Other Notes:

Adjunct faculty may be eligible for insurance benefits provided by the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) contingent upon the satisfaction of specific eligibility requirements defined by ERS.
