University of Maryland University College

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is an accredited institution of higher education located in Adelphi, Maryland and providing its academic courses and programs in Maryland and through distance delivery. UMUC offers four-year undergraduate and graduate programs and is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. UMUC is a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, an agency of the State of Maryland. Each of the seven colleges in the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) — Brookhaven, Cedar Valley, Eastfield, El Centro, Mountain View, North Lake and Richland — is individually accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to offer the associate degree.

UMUC welcomes students who have received their associate degree from Dallas County Community College District and wish to pursue their bachelor's degree at UMUC. The following guidelines apply to those students and are designed to facilitate student transfer and transition.

Transfer of Credits from the Associate's Degree

UMUC accepts up to 90 semester hours from all sources combined toward the bachelor's degree. This is subject to maximum allowances for each type of credit, including but not limited to:

70 semester hours from two-year institutions
60 semester hours for ACE-approved innovative learning, including learning evaluated by approved standardized examinations and professional training programs
60 semester hours of credit for study completed in military service schools and professional credit, on the basis of American Council of Education (ACE) recommendations on credit
30 semester hours of credit for study completed in Military Occupational Specialties (MOS), portfolio assessment, and/or course challenge exams
21 semester hours of coherently related vocational and technical credit, applicable as elective credit only toward the B.S.

UMUC will accept transfer of credits earned from community or technical colleges up to a maximum of 70 credits for the bachelor’s degree.

UMUC will apply such credits towards the appropriate UMUC degree. Credits will be applied as appropriate, first toward UMUC's General Education and cross-curricular requirements, then to requirements for the student's chosen academic major and minor.

General Education Requirements

UMUC requires the completion of 41 semester hours of general education requirements for completion of a baccalaureate degree; transfer credits from DCCCD may be used as appropriate to complete all requirements with the exception of the upper-level intensive writing requirement (which cannot be satisfied by a lower-level course).

UMUC will, on request, review DCCCD's degree and compare general education requirements of the two institutions. The comparison may be used to encourage students to take appropriate elective courses and avoid additional lower-level requirements after their transfer to UMUC. (Review is attached.)

Other Requirements and Limitations on Transfer Credit

1. The following limitations apply to acceptance of transfer credit:

The student transferring must meet UMUC's admission criteria and other applicable policies and procedures.
Transfer of credit must be in accord with applicable Maryland laws, rules and regulations.
No transfer credit is accepted without official transcripts.
Grades earned for transferred credits must be at least a C.
Credits earned at other institutions during a period of disciplinary suspension or dismissal from UMUC are not accepted in transfer.
Courses must not duplicate other courses for which credit has been awarded.
Credits for remedial or pre-college-level courses are not accepted in transfer. This includes courses in English as a Second Language and intermediate algebra (or lower math) courses.
ACE-approved associate/baccalaureate credit in academic areas may transfer and be used to satisfy degree requirements up to the maximum number of credits.
Credit classified by ACE as "vocational certificate" level is not accepted in transfer.
ACE-approved associate/baccalaureate level vocational and technical credit, from Brookhaven College, Cedar Valley College, Eastfield College, El Centro College, Mountain View College, and Richland College may be accepted to a maximum of 21 semester hours and applied toward a B.S. degree at UMUC. This vocational/technical credit may be used for elective credit only, not for degree requirements such as general education or major or minor requirements.

2. UMUC accepts credit from other sources awarded by DCCCD as follows:

A maximum of 30 semester hours of examination credit will be accepted for courses that appear on the official transcript with a grade of C or better.
A student who desires to transfer Advanced Placement ("AP") credit that was awarded at DCCCD must have a transcript of those scores sent directly to UMUC from the College Board. When those scores have been received, an advisor will determine whether they meet the standards established at UMUC for granting AP credit, and how much credit may be awarded.
Transfer credit for the two-year institution's prior learning program will be accepted up to a maximum of 15 semester hours, if it is listed on the transcript with a passing grade.
Third-party credit, including military and ACE-evaluated courses, will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

3. A student who has already completed 70 semester hours may not apply further credit from a junior college or a community college to a degree from UMUC. However, UMUC will allow students who enroll in UMUC before completing the degree from DCCCD to transfer credits back according with that institution's academic policies and procedures, in order to complete a degree there.

Promotion and Marketing

UMUC encourages DCCCD to refer students for transfer and completion of the bachelor's degree. DCCCD may list UMUC as a possible transfer institution for the bachelor's degree, reproduce this statement and use it for the information and referral of students. Other materials are available on request. Any other use of UMUC's name or logo requires UMUC’s prior written consent.
