STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

Dallas County Community College District and Southern Methodist University hereby enter into the following agreement governing the matriculation of Dallas County Community College District students to Southern Methodist University. This contract shall commence on September 2004. And shall continue until such time as either or both institutions wish to terminate it. This agreement sets forth the terms and conditions of students’ transfer from Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) (including all of the following DCCCD campuses: Brookhaven, Cedar Valley, Eastfield, El Centro, Mountain View, North Lake, and Richland) to Southern Methodist University (SMU).

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

In order to facilitate and improve the transfer process for our mutual students, DCCCD and SMU hereby enter into the following agreement:

DCCCD students who follow the recommended program of study – the common core and transfer curriculum, and who meet all other admissions requirements shall be eligible for admission to SMU. Transfer students must meet the same standards and criteria for admission to a major degree sequence as a native SMU student. Admission criteria is described in the SMU catalogue, http://www.smu.edu/catalogs/undergrad/default.asp and SMU admission web site,http://www.smu.edu/admission/apply_transfer.asp

SMU and DCCCD will jointly develop Transfer Guides, Transfer Admission, and Course Equivalency Guides, utilizing both SMU and DCCCD numbers for all majors offered at SMU. By creating these guides SMU and DCCCD assure students that courses listed in these guides are freely transferable between SMU and DCCCD.

Representatives from SMU and the DCCCD will meet or make contact during August of each year to update course equivalencies, transfer guides and transfer admission information to be used the subsequent academic year.

A student transferring to SMU under this agreement shall have acceptance of academic credit hours earned at DCCCD, with the following condition that the curricular and general conditions be met:

  1. The student must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.7 or better in at least 30 credit hours of transferable work for admission to SMU. Students transferring with a lower G.P.A. and with fewer than 30 credit hours will be considered on an individual basis.
  2. All transfers for business, communications, or engineering must maintain a certain GPA for subset requirements. Transfer students who intend to major in the performing arts of Dance, Music, or Theatre must audition.
  3. Students must complete at least 60 hours in residence at SMU.
  4. SMU shall accept a maximum of 62 credit hours in transfer from DCCCD (60 credit hours plus 2 physical activity courses is recommended).

Note: Remedial/developmental or technical/vocational courses will not be included for transfer in this General Articulation Agreement from DCCCD colleges unless specified by individual colleges in a Program-to-Program Articulation Agreement.

AGREEMENT CONTINUATION AND DISSOLUTION

This agreement shall be reviewed on an annual basis or any time program changes are to be made by either institution. Any program changes will be identified and incorporated into subsequent agreements. The DCCCD Chancellor and the SMU President, or their designees must approve amendments to this agreement. Any other modifications to this agreement may be made following written notice from the DCCCD Chancellor and the SMU President, or their designees. Once this agreement is signed by the appropriate officials at DCCCD and SMU, each is free to publicize this arrangement in a manner consistent with the agreement. This articulation agreement shall remain in effect until one or both institutions deem it necessary to terminate it.

By signing each party recognizes the commitment to exchange only the most current and accurate information. This agreement may be terminated by either party by giving written notice of said party’s intention to the Chancellor of the DCCCD or his designee and the SMU President, or his designee.

This agreement shall be in effect beginning September 1, 2004.
