Professor W.G. Garland currently serves as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Services in the Dallas County Community College District. As Associate Vice Chancellor, WG or “G” as he prefers to be called, directly supervises the district directors for the varied student service components of the Dallas Community College District (65,000 students). These district directors include: Rising Star, Educational Partnerships, Financial Aid, Student Programs, Transfer Services, Articulation and University Relations, and Department of Outreach, Recruitment and Community Engagement. In addition to his work at the district office, G works closely with the seven campus vice presidents for student services.
WG is a native Dallasite and graduate of the Dallas Independent School District and was Valedictorian at James Madison in 1969. He began working with the Dallas County Community College District in 1984 at the El Centro Job Training Center now the Edmond Kahn Job Training Center. G left the DCCCD in 1998 accepting his first vice presidency at Grayson College in Grayson County. He has served as vice president for student services at Shasta College – a rural community college in far northern California and vice president for student services at Valley College – an urban community college in southern California. In addition to his work in education, W.G. has worked as an outpatient methadone counselor with Dallas County Mental Health and Mental Retardation and was a unit psychologist with the Oklahoma prison system where he received accolades for successfully negotiating a hostage release during the 1983 Oklahoma prison riot.
