College enrollment rates have grown rapidly over the past forty years, but completion rates have not kept pace. The community college mission of access is being realized; however, getting students through college isn’t enough. We must help them matriculate in our colleges.
The overarching goal of the Office of Student Retention, established in the 2008-2009 academic year, is to increase the educational attainment of students matriculating through the DCCCD colleges. By identifying “best” and innovative practices in the areas of student success and engagement, the Office of Student Retention has provided more than $2 million in funding for those programs and projects with the most potential to help improve the overall retention and persistence rates of developmental education, first-time-in-college, and first generation students throughout the district.
