Academic Challenge
The program is sponsored by the Vietnamese Professional Society-DFW Chapter, North Lake College and DCCCD. Its objective is to encourage young people to learn Vietnamese, their home language. The event was conducted entirely in Vietnamese in a "Jeopardy" style competition. In the past, about 60 students are grouped by age and grade level and compete against each other in subjects that they learn in the previous school year. Prizes and awards were given to the winners. Beginning 2003, DCCCD is one of the sponsors.

Adult Basic Education Parent Presentations DORCE works with Dallas ISD and its Adult Basic Education programs to visit the classroom and present on the various educational opportunities offered by the DCCCD. Presentations are customized based on number of participants and are offered in bilingual format when appropriate. Presentations are coordinated by the department of Outreach, Recruitment and Community Engagement and each individual instructor or Community Liaison representatives.

America’s Night Out Against Crime This event is sponsored by the North Park/Love Field Civic League. It is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support in local anti-crime programs, and strengthen community partnerships. DCCCD participates by hosting an Information table as well as offer in-kind donations.

ANAND Bazaar An annual celebration for the India’s Independence Day with over 20,000 attendance at the Lone Star Park. The event includes cultural programs and entertainment for all ages. DCCCD has been one of the sponsors since 2003.

Annual Convention of the Chinese Institute of Engineers-DFW chapter An all day event that focus in all fields in engineers. The program includes vendors’ booth, seminars in engineering, product marketing, and career advancement for engineers, etc. It concludes with an evening dinner banquet and award ceremony. Beginning 2003, DCCCD is one of the sponsors.

Asian American Leadership Institute A leadership program sponsored by the Asian American Forum, a non-profit organization in which Julia So is a board member. Its objective is to provide leadership training to Asian American professionals in the Metroplex. This annual all day event covers topics like leadership skills, civic responsibility, career advancement, etc. DCCCD has been one of the sponsors since 2002. In the past, about 250 attended the institute.

Asian Festival An annual event sponsored by the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce to celebrate Asian Heritage Month. DCCCD has been one of the sponsored in the last three years. The event draws over 15,000 people of all ethnic groups in the Metroplex.

Asian Outreach via Media Participate in interviews with print media to reach various Asian communities with information on DCCCD and Rising Star. Print media is published in several languages including Vietnamese and Chinese.

Asian Outreach via Sponsorship and Participation Participate in many Asian targeted events including the Asian American Forum Leadership Institute, Vietnamese Science and Culture Association Concert, Chinese Institute of Engineers Speech Contest, and the Asian Festival. Reach the Asian business community by serving as the Education Chair of the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce. Developed an Asian Advisory Council to serve DCCCD DORCE outreach efforts.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas (BBBSNT) DORCE coordinates with BBBSNT to engage staff/faculty and students in school-based mentoring.

Community Symposium for Justice in Education Hosted by the Dallas Bar Association, the annual symposium is held annually in November for community leaders to discuss current education issues in DISD and institutions of higher education in the Dallas area. The DCCCD has been involved in the planning and execution of the symposium for the last two years.

Dallas Concilio College Day DCCCD partners with the Dallas Concilio in an effort to increase parent involvement in the DISD schools and continue the involvement into college. Parent involvement is a key factor in student success. Parents influence their children’s decision-making regarding which college they will attend. Fall and Spring parent visits to the DCCCD campuses. Parents participate in workshops designed to educate them about the college system and higher education opportunities available to them and their children.

Dallas Rotary Club’s Camp Enterprises College Night is a college fair for 120 of the top students (top 10% in their class and SAT) in DISD in conjunction with The Rotary Club's Camp Enterprise weekend. Camp Enterprise is an intensive three-an-a-half-day seminar put on by the Dallas Rotary Club that teaches business issues for a select group of high school seniors while interacting with business executives, politicians, union leaders, and government representatives. Dallas County Community College District host a table at this event.

Dallas SCORES! "Dallas SCORES empowers students in urban communities using soccer, writing, creative expression, and service-learning. With teamwork as the unifying value, Dallas SCORES inspires youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in their communities." DORCE partners with Dallas SCORES! to bring elementary school students to a DCCCD college for a program and tour each spring.

DFW Youth Speech Contest An annual speech contest for students from first grade and up. The contest is sponsored by Texas Dragon Toastmaster Club, Richland College and DCCCD. Its objective is to promote interest in public speaking and an opportunity for youths to enhance their presentation skills by competing. DCCCD has been one of the sponsors since 2002. In the past, between 80 to 120 students had participated.

Dia de la Familia DCCCD forms partnerships with business and organizations to annually sponsor Dia de la Familia at any of the seven colleges. It provides opportunities and possibilities for the Hispanic community to empower themselves with the knowledge of how to access a college education. There are activities for the whole family and booths hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations. Each campus also showcases the many programs they offer by having College Depts host their own Information Tables and Sessions. This event is usually held each year in April and the hosting DCCCD campus alternates yearly.

Festival Hispano de la Salud Latino Wellness Fair is a family orientated event, with attendance of about 5000 people. The event is sponsored by the American Heart Association at Fair Park. The event offers free health screening to low income families, specifically the Latino community. It also provides information for illness prevention and promotes good health. The event offers the non-profit organizations and educational entities to provide educational information to this group. DCCCD offers information about educational opportunities through a table set up.

Girls, Inc. Girls, Inc. is a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. It provides vital educational programs to girls, particularly those in high-risk, underserved areas. DORCE partners with Girls, Inc. by providing visual displays called "College Corners" at all six locations in the area, making presentations to the girls on college access and careers, and coordinating a speaker’s series, "Girl Talk."

Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce – Stars on Rise Scholarship program Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has fostered the Stars on the Rise program. The program helps shape the future of over 100 students throughout the Dallas County by helping them afford a college education through a variety of monetary scholarships. The Dallas County Community College District provides a total of fourteen in-kind scholarships of $500 per student and is recognized as one of their major scholarship contributors. The Hispanic Chamber sets the scholarship requisites. DORCE initiates and maintains communication with the Hispanic Chamber to coordinate dispersion of funds through the District Foundation office.

Japanese Fall Festival Held every September, the Japanese Fall Festival is a cultural event presented by the Dallas Japanese Association. Its goal is to educate the public about the Japanese culture and provide general DFW information for the Japanese residents in the area. The DCCCD has participated in this event that draws over 2,000 people of all ethnic groups in the area.

Junior Leadership Seminar A high school leadership seminar, the Junior Leadership Seminar is sponsored by the Asian Youth Leadership Club, Richland College and DCCCD. Its objective is to provide grades 9-12 students with training in leadership skills such as presentation skills, career planning, decision-making, etc. Beginning 2004, DCCCD is one of the sponsors. Between 60 to 100 students attended the seminar.

Las Llaves del Éxito: Una Feria de Educación para la Familia (The Keys to Success: A College Fair for Families) Area colleges and universities – in partnership with the Dallas County Community College District, the Dallas Independent School District, the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and several community-based organizations have organized a one-day education conference for families in Dallas County. The event also receives support from the Black Chamber of Commerce and the Asian Chamber of Commerce. The conference is free and open to the public, but will have a focus on reaching the Latino community and will be conducted with concurrent sessions on accessing the K-16 educational systems in both English and Spanish. This conference is held once during the Fall Semester and once during the Spring Semester. The event was hosted by Eastfield College during the Fall 2007 and the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) during the Spring 2008 semester.

Latino Book and Family Festival: James Olmos DCCCD provides information about education opportunities through a table set up at this event. The event targets the Latino population by offering a variety of cultural foods, entertainment with an emphasis on Hispanic Authors and their books. The event aims to promote reading at an early age in the Hispanic Community. The event is held at the Dallas Fair Park. The event has also served as a platform for issues such as Immigration, etc.

Leadership Tomorrow A leadership program of the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce that exposed its participants of the complex issues in the DFW area and to develop well rounded individuals to participant in the betterment of the community in the DFW region. The DCCCD has been its supporter since its inception this year. Julia So is one of the original architects of the program.

Mentors in Motion (MIM) Mentors in Motion (MIM) is a coalition of area non-profits that work together to increase awareness of and participation in mentoring programs. DORCE participates with MIM as sponsors of events and activities, providing workshops on college preparation and financial aid, and including MIM at DCCCD events and activities when possible.

Mother-Daughter/Father-Son Luncheon The Mother/Daughters and Father/Son is coordinated by Dallas ISD. Every year a luncheon is hosted at one of the Community Colleges hi-lighting the many accomplishments through the year. This also gives the DCCCD an opportunity to reach out approximately 40 parents and their 6th grade students about Higher Education. The luncheon is paid by the District Office, and the hosting College provides a Speaker in regards to Financial Aid, Career Opportunities, etc. The event emphasizes the importance of higher education both to parents and students, knowing the great influence a parent has a child’s decision at an early age.

Northeast Health, Education and Safety Fair An annual event co-sponsored by the Dallas Police Department and DCCCD. The event is at no cost to the DCCCD. Past attendance had been around 1,000 to 1,500.

TRAC (Transition Resource Action Center) DORCE partners with TRAC, a center designed to help young people transitioning from foster care to independent living access benefits and resources. The foster care system will pay for all of their higher education through tuition waivers with no limit if they activate the waiver by age 21. DORCE supports TRAC with presentations to life skills classes and caseworkers on DCCCD programs and services, providing Rising Star and other financial aid information, and defining options for students to activate their tuition waiver as soon as possible.

University Crossroads A collaboration of colleges and universities across North Texas network together to provide comprehensive outreach services and "one stop shopping" for college readiness programs. Members will work together to promote the partnership to the public and to other institutions, and will participate in numerous organized events.

Visions: The Women’s Expo This two-day event celebrating women’s needs and issues is brought to the public by Adjuvant Expos each August. The DCCCD has purchased a booth for several years, providing DCCCD promo items and educational information to the thousands of visitors at the expo. The DCCCD booth is paid for by Marketing and Communications; DORCE sets up the booth and staffs it with volunteers from across the district.

Viva Dallas - Expo The Hispanic Expo is a comprehensive and multifaceted consumer products and services exposition that will provide exhibitors an opportunity to connect face-to-face with thousands of potential customers in an exciting, professional, and fun-filled atmosphere. The Hispanic Expo will also provide a venue for cultural awareness through a wide range of cultural activities for the entire family to enjoy. The event is held at the Dallas Market Hall and has reached a participation level of 25,000 people.

ya es hora ¡CIUDADANIA! Univision 23 sponsors this Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex campaign to educate on the process of U.S. citizenship along with other area and national organizations. DORCE supported the campaign by sponsoring the printing of campaign packet materials and providing the packets at our colleges and the District Marketing office.
