Hands-on Training in Adult Education ESL Teaching
Learn methods and techniques that really work, while enhancing your ESL presentation skills and knowledge. The ESL Teaching Academy training coursework can be a helpful resource to prepare for the ExCET/TExES2 exam, the classes are approved as Continuing Professional Education hours toward Standard Certificate renewal3, and students can build a transcript with a record of earned CEUs, which are recognized across the United States. A Skills Award overall certificate is also available to those who complete six core courses, two electives and the practicum and observation. Previous ESL teaching experience is not required. As minimum requirements for participating in the program, interested students must hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent, and have advanced-level English language proficiency.

Course Description: Help your students get the most out of their ESL pronunciation classroom. Learn how to let students discover differences in similar sounds and what they need to do to produce them. Practical strategies include: how to let students discover differences in similar sounds; teaching students how to pronounce the American "r"; emphasizing priority sounds for the English language; using lists of most frequently-used words; and developing exercises customized to your students' age and language backgrounds.

| Course Description: This course focuses on predominant theories of second language learning and acquisition and examines factors that influence language learning. The course covers topics such as the effects of environment, biological factors, age and personality on language learning; the role of the first language, individual learner variables, error analysis, and learning strategies, among others. Although this course will present theoretical research findings in language acquisition, it will also provide ESL and foreign language teachers with practical recommendations for developing proficiency in a second language. (As possible, it is recommended that this course be taken prior to the ESL Teaching Methods courses offered through the ESL Teaching Academy.) |
